While hanging out in turtle mode, I realized that perpetration has actually been in power for a long time.
At the time, I felt pretty defeated by this idea. It made me feel sad and a bit hopeless.
However, I sat with it and digested this idea and now I feel differently.
While it’s important to observe an idea like this it is also important to do the work to find the light in the situation. Something we humans have to do intentionally because our hardwiring is built to protect us from potential harm.
So, here’s where I am at with this.
Yes, perpetration is still in power, however we are woke AF about it. Way more woke than in the past. That’s no small thing.
There’s also a LOT of people fighting for good. As a collective we have a TON of power. We simply need to realize we have that power and press on.
In terms of history, I know it feels like we are going back in time right now. This is true on a lot of levels. And if we take a look at history we will also find that the pendulum swings back and forth to create long term change. This is part of the process.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t name it and get into action when we see things going backwards – we should do all of these things. That’s how we continue to forge ahead.
And, I would advocate for a wider perspective to help us not get so defeated. After all we have to stay engaged to create the change we wish to see.
We have, as a species, grown a lot over the 200,000 years we have been around. We are still in process and as the most powerful species currently on the planet, it’s up to us to turn this ship around.
In this space, someone recommended Rebecca Solnit’s book, Hope in the Dark, to me. It’s phenomenal and has helped me get grounded in the face of our political climate.
Here’s a quote to illuminate some of what I am saying here:
“Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act. When you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the outcomes–you alone or you in concert with a few dozen or several million others.”
Check it out and let’s get moving.
